Diving Galapagos – What's All The Fuss About

Diving Galapagos is simply the very best diving the world has to offer, when looking to dive with big animal life.

The sheer variety of life that you will see when you dive Galapagos will astound you and the sheer abundance of it, the waters are literally teeming with life.
A TYPICAL dive in the Galapagos Islands, you will see SHARKS, lots of Sharks, and lots of species of Sharks, such as the Scalloped Hammerheads which hang out, just off the walls and then cruise in for a cleaning at the many cleaner stations located along the wall drop offs. You will get up close encounters with these 15 foot giants.
Then there are the Galapagos Sharks, now these guys are a little intimidating, I remember when I was on my first trip diving the Galapagos, and on the boat after one of the dives, we had commented we had not seen any Galapagos Sharks yet, well they heard us because the next dive I spotted one who was not shy at all, and came within a couple of feet of me, and then another showed up, and another, until we had 20 or so huge Galapagos Sharks all circling our group. It was exciting but unnerving at the same time, one thing is for sure Diving Galapagos is WILD Diving.
We also saw Dolphins, jumping on the surface on many occasions, and we had underwater encounters which were magical. I have been lucky enough to have experienced this in Belize many times, and there is no other way to see Dolphins except in their own natural habitat and on their own terms,
What to expect when you Dive Galapagos

Diving Galapagos can be challenging and while some sites are no different to your typical vacation dive, the better sites where you see the real big stuff can be challenging to anyone but Intermediate and Advanced divers so it's best to ensure you are completely comfortable with your equipment and totally comfortable in the water for maximum enjoyment.
Currents – Currents can be really strong when Diving Galapagos, and it is these currents that are responsible for the massive amounts of sea life you will see when diving the Galapagos Islands.. Nearly all the dives you will do, will have some form of current, and therefore most dives are drift dives, and you should be comfortable diving in currents if planning on diving the Galapagos Islands.
How Deep Do You Dive – With the exception of the Sea Lion Dives most of the dives are in the 75 plus range and that is where you will find the big stuff of course when hunting for Whale Sharks half of the dive can be spent in shallow water looking for the behemoths to pass by.
HOLY MACKEREL – It can get chilly on some of the dives due to the currents and the thermo clines, now I am a bit of a little girl where the cold is concerned and I wear a 4mm semi dry suit when I dive in the Caribbean so you can imagine what I wear if its below 80 degrees. Most divers are comfortable in a thick wetsuit for the central dives but Wolf and Darwin are not cold at all but long bottom times can make it a bit chilly.
Monsters of the Deep – When you dive in the Galapagos expect to see everything and anything, these waters have abundant marine life and you could literally bump into anything on any dive. You will definitely dive with. Sharks, Rays, Sea lions, (there are no Seals in the Galapagos) and of course the behemoth Whale Sharks which are common at certain times of the year. I have even had sailfish come by as I am doing my safety stop, now that was Awesome.
Stay Safe- Booking your Dive Galapagos trip it's important you book with an experienced dive company that has many years experience and specializes in not only travel to the Galapagos but specializes in Diving the Galapagos. You will also want to make sure you are fit and ensure your experience level is up to par prior to making the trip. Decompression Sickness is always a remote possibility on any dive trip ad its best to be prepared, and for many years now, the Galapagos has its own Re compression chamber in the unlikely chance someone needs it.
Don't Forget Topside- A trip to the Galapagos is not complete without a topside adventure to see the penguins Iguanas and other land based creatures and the great thing is the boat stops off at a few islands and exploration trips are part of each cruise.

So what is a typical dive like when you Dive Galapagos? You can also see Turtles surfacing to take a breath before descending back into the depths and all this before you have even descended.

Manta Rays can reach a massive size, and many times the only way you know they are there, is the light suddenly dims as a massive Manta Ray flies over the top of you blocking the sunlight for a few seconds, making you look up. Then there are the Mobula Rays that are about 12-14 wingspan, they travel in groups just like a squadron of jet fighters flying by in formation, swimming very close and circling the divers before swimming off.

Then there is grand daddy of them all, the largest fish in the sea ,the mighty Whale Shark. Whale Sharks can grow to over 40ft in length and are abundant in the Galapagos and if you have never dove with a Whale Shark your chances are very high that you will see your first one on your dive trip to Dive the Galapagos.
